In one of previous blog we discussed the environment: issues like plastic lined coffee cups, paper straws. Now for the big picture: by buying organic coffee you are massively helping the environment in the coffee producing areas and by buying Fairtrade you are enabling small producers to make a living. Given the disastrous forest poisoning and destruction, particularly in Peru, this could be more significant than the paper cup issue.
There is some interesting research from Germany. People who, when asked, are pro-environment do make changes over small things (like coffee cups), but on the really big polluting issues like long haul air flights, gigantic cars and big houses, few are prepared to make real changes.
Poor people may sometimes lack environmental awareness on issues like littering, but even so their carbon footprint is likely to be smaller.
