Poverty among cocoa producers as bad as ever, says shocking report.
Even Fairtrade cocoa producers are suffering the effects of the recent crash in cocoa prices that were already too low. A report in Cocoa Barometer offers dismal news for anyone who imagines that the system is moving in the right direction. Faitrade certification at least specifies that a product must be bought at a specified minimum price. It’s the only system that even tries to do this.
The authors don’t say it out loud, but we will: certifications like Rainforest have up to now been little more than an industry greenwash (= environmental whitewash). Revolution anyone?
