Transport less of a problem than production waste say Fairtrade Foundation!
An interesting report from the Fairtrade Foundation suggests that when it comes to the climate emergency, transport costs are not as much of a problem as wasteful production methods.
“Contrary to popular belief, even long-distance shipments do not significantly increase the environmental impact of imported products,” said researchers of the Natural Resources Institute Finland in December 2018. For example, despite the air transport, Kenyan Fairtrade roses have a significantly lower climate footprint than Dutch roses. This is because greenhouses require no heating in the warm temperatures of East Africa.
