As the third-largest producer of coffee in the world, Colombia is synonym with quality. Due to the diversity of growing conditions in the country, its coffee beans offer different distinctive flavours depending on where they come from, from fruity to floral and nutty.
The particularity of Colombia is that most coffee farms are small holdings, which means that farmers can be very attentive to their crop, and will choose bean by bean which ones are ready to be harvested and which ones need more ripening, providing ingredients of the highest quality.
Colombian coffee beans lend themselves to all types of roasting, each one will reveal a different aspect of their flavour. The medium roast we sell is recognised as the classic flavour, while being smooth and easy drinking. It is recommended for filter, cafetières and mild espresso.
Coffee farmers were under financial stress for the last few decades due to low prices of coffee on the commodities market but thanks to the effort of a number of national and international organisations promoting organic Fairtrade coffee, the situation is improving.
Coffee growing is also under threat from climate change, with unpredictable rainfall damaging coffee bushes and exposing them to pests like the coffee berry borer insect and coffee rust, with devastating consequences. Widespread replanting of rust-resisting bushes has had great success.
